Refuse to Say Cheese, Capture the Story
by Me Ra Koh
I picked up a SLR camera (a camera with a removable lens) six years ago with no technical training. My daughter was 18 months old. We miscarried our second child, and I wanted to capture the story of my daughter’s life more than ever. Someone once told me photography was all about fractions. I was horrible at math and thus intimidated by photography.
But after the loss of our baby, the need to capture my daughter’s life in images became stronger than my fear of whether or not I could learn how to use a camera. To my relief, I discovered photography has little to do with fractions and everything to do with storytelling.
Prior to becoming a professional photographer, I was an author. Storytelling is a passion I had been immersed in for over 10 years. There are key storytelling elements I intentionally wove throughout my writing so my readers would want to turn the page. When I picked up a camera, I found these same storytelling elements applied to photography.
