Patio Parties When Pregnant: Mocktails for Mama-to-Be
Breezy nights. Outdoor decks. Seaside air. Refreshing drinks. Such is the stuff of summer... But when baby is on board, Mama-to-Be’s beverage choices become limited!
Jackie Rose and Caroline Angel, authors of The Newly Non-Drinking Girl’s Guide to Pregnancy, generously share a few of their creative concoction recipes with us -- sure to appeal to the temporarily abstaining! |
The Virgin Margarita
We hated giving up this summertime classic during our pregnancies. Just seeing the salt-rimmed margarita glasses made us pant like Pavlov’s dogs. In that spirit, we’ve modified the Official Drink of Summer with that bun in your oven in mind. We highly recommend our version for all those outdoor summer events: barbeques, beach days and pool parties. As always, blended with ice is twice as nice. Non-pregnant friends will be begging you to make one for them too.
Ice
1 ½ oz. Sour Mix
½ oz. Lime Juice
½ oz. Orange Juice
Lime Wedges, for garnish
Pour ingredients (minus the lime wedges) into a cocktail shaker. Shake and pour into a rocks glass or a margarita glass. Add more ice if needed. Our highly recommended alternative is to blend in a blender with ice. Garnish with a wedge of lime.
Variation: If you’re not in a do-it-yourself mood, lemon and/or lime margarita mix works just as well. Frozen or on the rocks, it’s up to you, just make sure you garnish with a lime and squeeze the juice into the drink. You almost won’t miss the tequila. (Yeah, right.)
