Choose Coastal Cottage Chic.
The coastal cottage look has been around for as long as there have been rental properties on the Cape. Devotees of this design trend rejoice; the look is being updated! You can still incorporate the beloved bead board and shells from your seaside stroll, but now add a piece of color-stained coral or a bright blue cabinet con pesce. Be as subtle or dominant as you dare; options run the gamut from bold coral prints to dainty dinnerware. For a look reminiscent of the Cote de Azur, display a pretty porcelain collection atop hand-painted nesting tables undergirded by a fabulous rug -- a bold coral pattern ties everything together. Seaside living has never been so chic!
Pick a Peck of Pretty Pigments.
Fall and Winter 2007 were all about grey, but finally we are emerging from this somber spectrum into a neoteric tint trend. 2008 is all about bold hues in a rainbow of colors, and teal in particular! From floor coverings to luscious lamplight, we are seeing a resurgence of robin’s-egg blue tones. If you aren’t quite ready to bestow blue upon your currently taupe walls, don’t fret. You can participate in this cerulean style by adding small touches, such as cool canvases that pick up on another important design trend: contrasting color. Think robin’s egg blue paired with a Chinese red, or even the classic white and black. Remember, bold is in for 2008 -- and the azure-blue sky is your luminous limit.
Furnish for Fido.
Paris totes Tinkerbell everywhere she goes. The Osbournes’ dogs have the run of the roost. Even Jonathan Adler is famously dedicated to bringing Fido in from the doghouse, making the Parker Hotel one of the only world-class pet-friendly hotels around. The celebs’ devotion to their dogs isn’t a new trend -- rather, they are simply publicizing what many of us do every day. Now, more than ever, we consider our pets to be companions, members of the family -- and we want furnishings and accessories to reflect that affection. Instead of relegating the crate to the mudroom, we are bringing our faithful friends indoors -- think doggie dens as occasional tables and pet beds that incorporate recent color ideas. Furniture isn’t the only trend, either. While you may never catch your Lassie in Lacoste, from collars to itsy-bitsy Burberry coats and even designer toys, high style for pets is in.
These aren’t the only trends coming our way -- the Asian look continues to be strong, as well as contrasting colors, metallics (they aren’t just for ballet flats anymore!) and bringing the outdoors in.
