Application
The four main elements involved in applying your “lip look” are: liner, color, finish and texture. The addition or alteration of each component can dramatically change your end result.
Liner: Lip symmetry is crucial to a beautifully made-up mouth. If your lips are not naturally symmetrical, then create the illusion with a lip liner.
ANGIE’S TIP:
Lip liner can create a “poutier” look because the lips look fuller. When applied to the whole lip, a lip liner will extend the duration of your color application because it is usually a matte finish. You can apply a matte liner to neutralize your natural lip color prior to your lipstick application, and if you make a mistake, just use your concealer to correct the line.
Color: The color of your lips is the most defining element of your makeup application because the hue you choose defines your look. Think about how red lips scream retro, hot pink gloss corresponds to a bombshell Barbie look, or how black equals Goth glam.
STEPHANIE’S TIP:
The lips naturally contain color. Sometimes when trying a new lip color it can be difficult to get the true shade because of the natural pigmentation in the lips. If you ever need to neutralize the natural color of the lips, try applying a very little concealer on the lips first and then apply the lipstick. A great concealer for this is Lancôme’s Maquicomplet Concealer.
ERIKA’S TIP:
A lip brush is essential when applying lip color. It does take a little extra time when you apply, but it lasts longer throughout the day. You don’t have to worry about as many touch-ups and it helps to prevent color from bleeding. This will also evenly distribute the product on the lip.
Finishes: You can alter your lip color depending on how you apply it. For instance, if you apply a stain to your usual color and press your lips together, you will achieve a very different look than if you apply a gloss liberally to both lips.
Stain: sheer coverage.
GEOFF’S TIP:
Use this first for a burst of natural color. As your top color wears off, you’ll have continuous color and can also use it give your every day lip color a little kick. Stains are generally peach or pink: choose the family that works best for you.
Frost: usually contains floating particles of either mica or glitter.
STEPHANIE’S TIP:
Yves St. Laurent has a frost with 24K gold flakes!
