In Nazi Germany, it was said that “the road to hell was paved with indifference.” I think it’s the same way with saving the planet. The difficult thing is that it’s not so easy to actually see what is going on. I rely on the media reports about global warming and carbon emissions, but I don’t actually see the ice caps melting out of my bedroom window, I don’t taste pesticides on carrots, and I don’t feel the toxins in cosmetics seeping into my skin. It sometimes doesn’t feel real or urgent. In a perfect world we wouldn’t have to worry about air and water pollution, about toxic foods and cosmetics that cause us to get sick, but they’re a reality. Indifference is a dull and ugly attitude. Passion is exciting and inspiring. I know all you soon-to-be Gorgeously Green girls out there are not afflicted with indifference.
The situation is so scary that it’s not only parts of Africa that are going to experience drastic water and food shortages -- we are going to experience them as well. Have you noticed how much your water and sanitation bills have gone up? That’s the first place that I began to feel it. I couldn’t believe that it was costing me as much as an expensive pair of shoes a month to irrigate my backyard. I’m now desperate to get a gray water system installed that will utilize the otherwise wasted water from my shower and toilet -- yes, to think that every flush is watering another rose would be pretty cool, and the savings could justify a cyber visit to JimmyChoo.com.
