Expectant parents have asked if there is any benefit to reading to babies while they are in utero. There have been some interesting studies done that seem to reveal a connection between hearing repeated stories while in the womb and being able to recognize those same stories as newborns. So it is plausible to believe that in utero babies can hear you. While it sounds a lot like speaking under water, a baby in utero is learning the sound of her mother’s voice. Talking, singing and reading to the baby can make that connection even stronger.

But much of this research is still in the infant stages, literally. My recommendation: any reason for a pregnant woman to put her feet up, relax, and read, I’m all in favor of. Whether or not you’re giving your child a head start on education is inconclusive, but you’ll definitely be giving yourself a much-needed break.

Fathers can benefit from reading to the unborn child, too. Pregnancy takes over a woman’s life, but fathers can feel a bit like outsiders, hanging around waiting for the big event. Dad can read to the baby and enjoy some active participation in the pregnancy.

And remember, we’re not limited to picture books and nursery rhymes. It’s never too early to share with your child your affection for baseball stats or your love of history. Choose what you like to read and share it with your little love.
