Gabbing Green -- Gorgeously -- with Sophie Uliano

We’re going green!
And with just a few words of wisdom from stunning Sophie Uliano, so will you!

The Posh Cravings Mamas: Good Afternoon, Sophie! Your new book, Gorgeously Green is coming out in April, so we know you are super busy…we truly appreciate you taking the time to chat with us! Can you tell us a bit about the catalyst to embark on your “gorgeously green” mission?

Sophie: I’ve always been drawn to “green” living. Maybe it’s something to do with the fact that I was raised by a really “gorgeously green” mom. I remember long English summers of picking fruits and vegetables from her massive organic garden. It’s always seemed natural. I also think my years of teaching yoga have led me to become super-conscious of taking great care of the environment.

But the biggest catalyst was having a baby. When I held that helpless little bundle in my arms, I became fiercely protective because I understood that there are so many hidden dangers in our environment that can really harm our children. And then I met this amazing psychology professor; he was so passionate about the environment in a way that hit a chord with me. I made a decision, over the next few weeks, that I wanted to devote my life to communicating to women the importance of taking care of our planet.

The Mamas: We love how you usher “green” into mama-life aspects beyond the oft-doled “get a hybrid” and “use cloth diapers” we hear so frequently. What are your favorite starter tips to give moms on going gorgeously green?

Sophie: I so get it that some moms haven’t got the money for a hybrid or the time for cloth diapers and that’s fine -- those things aren’t mandatory in going “green.” The most important thing for a mom is to get on the non-toxic train: getting rid of all toxic cleaners, insecticides and pesticides; feeding your babies and children organic food (if you can’t afford to go completely organic, make sure that at least your baby food is 100% percent organic). Teach your kids how great it feels to take care of their earth -- explain to them about recycling and encourage them to grow an edible plant.
