High-Style with Kids in Mind
Eliza chats with the mamas behind Moxie Kids, Gina DeFrank and Penny Ashley-Lawrence
High-style isn’t just for Mamas (and their men) anymore! Fashion-forward finds are hitting the shelves at trendy tot boutiques. I sat down with the masterminds behind Moxie Kids, the new North Carolina children’s boutique with an LA/NYC design sensibility. Gina and Penny dished about their favorite style-savvy celebrity kids and tipped me off to some fabulous gear and fashion finds!
Just last week, you opened Moxie Kids…a boutique with incredibly designed options for little ones. How should parents encourage an appreciation for style in their children? Can they?
Gina: After a certain age kids seem to know exactly what they want! In most cases they just want fun and comfort. As parents, I think it’s important to expose them to a variety of styles and quality pieces and hope for the best!
Penny: First, I think parents need to embrace the notion that young children want to dress themselves! Let your child pick out their own outfits each day. If they are making poor decisions at first (like sandals in the snow) then start by offering them two or three choices that you’ve selected and let them pick their favorite. You’ll be surprised and delighted by what they pick.
How would you describe your personal style, both in attire and interior design?
Gina: With clothing, I tend to be eclectic with my style and I have an affinity for unique classics. If an item is made in vintage or reproduction vintage fabric, I want to wear it!
Penny: I like to take risks with attire and interior design. In my home, I mix up textures, colors and fabrics – anything that looks like I did it by accident. With attire, I like mixing conservative with casual – like a pretty floral skirt with a rock concert tee.
In your view, which celebrity kid has phenomenal style?
Penny: Madonna's daughter, Lourdes! She is my favorite - mixes up styles, uses color and looks confident.
Gina: While I don't have a particular favorite, I do really like the trend where celebrity parents are dressing their kids in simple and hip clothes. Kingston Rossdale is probably the coolest. His mom, Gwen Stefani, has fabulous style and has launched her own children's fashion line.
