Talking Tootsies with Celebrity Pedicurist, Jin Soon
Thanks for taking the time to talk with us, Jin! Could we start with what might seem a silly question: if our nails are comprised of dead cells, what can we do -- if anything -- to keep them healthy?
Nail health is crucial because nail health is an indication of one's overall health. In general, if your nails are healthy, you are healthy. Bad nails are often a symptom of an underlying condition of less-than-perfect health. For example, if someone has dry nails, it is often due to general dehydration residing throughout the entire body. Did you ever notice how strong and healthy looking the nails are on young people? That is because they have generally not yet developed any chronic health conditions.
Nails may be composed of dead cells, but they still need to be moisturized. Think about raw wood versus well-oiled wood. The same comparison applies to nails. When your nails are dry, they become very brittle. I suggest using cuticle oil multiple times a day. One of my favorites for top-notch cuticle oil is Sally Hansen Salon Nail Care Healing Cuticle Oil. But most importantly, don't forget to drink lots of water. Keeping hydrated helps revitalize the entire body, and what's good for your body is good for your nails!
We’d be thrilled to get a daily mani-pedi, but what would you advise?
I recommend getting manicures once a week and pedicures once every two weeks to maintain healthy nails; shaping, grooming cuticles and polishing are the basic steps for both.
