As soon as a pregnancy is confirmed, it begins. That indicative second line appears on the test wand, and a hand rushes to caress the belly. Upon encountering another being, our species reflexively wishes to initiate contact…by whatever means possible.
A tummy rub, a lighthouse, smoke signals, Abstract Expressionism, Chanel No. 5, Turandot -- our human lives are characterized and enriched by wonders borne of a desire for dialogue.
Even the phrase “fashion statement” implies the non-verbal transmission of an intentional idea!
My twins are too young to speak, yet onlookers are already curious if they speak their own mystic “twin language” -- or idioglossia for those who prefer their discourse to be more scientifically precise. The latest theory is that the oft-mythologized “twin speak” is merely one twin mimicking the early effort babble of his/her sibling, and responding in kind -- so eager their urge to exchange a few words!
Whether our maternal drives motivate us to kick-start literal conversation with our offspring -- or simply to speak to their sponge-like senses, commence the communication. Be loquacious with love.
