All That Glitters...
By Eliza
While the Golden Globes cancellation left us feeling pretty low earlier this month, the price of gold hit an all-time high -- a precious metallic milestone that leads me to reflect on this most burnished of blessings.
Admittedly, I defined myself as more of silver siren until recently; chrome, steel and platinum were the sort of shine I called mine. And yet, after witnessing the curious fashion comeback of gold these last few years, I’m sold! Up and down the runways glide golden girls in lamé, sequins, spangles and even glorious aurous chain mail... all lit-up like neo-knights of the new millennium. Modern alchemy at its most magnificent!
But how to bring this opulent ore to the fore in an everyday way? Think back to Shakespeare’s timeless style savvy: To gild refined gold, to paint the lily ... is wasteful and ridiculous excess. I couldn’t agree more – too much of a gild thing and you’ll end up looking like Queen Midas of the Midwest, the Fort Knox of Fort Worth, the 49er from Flagstaff.
So, like the sonnet snippet says, give the heave-ho to head-to-toe glow and simply accentuate your allure with a hint here and there, an inkling of an ingot, an ounce of ore... because with gold, like most pure pleasures, less is always more.
From the bank to the Bard to the Beatles, the beauty of gold shines though in bars both mineral and musical. Until next time, then, may golden slumbers fill your eyes, and smiles awake you when you rise...
xoxo
