Evolution of Eco-Fashion
As the tiny trickle from a hidden spring makes its brave way to the vast ocean, so, too, has the embrace of Earth’s most precious ecological offerings moved from the smallest, most progressive of social circles to a passionate and all-encompassing precedent of historic proportions. And when something as potently paramount as our survival as a planet is at stake, Syd says: It’s about time.
Fashion, my fabulous friends, is so much more than just an “induced epidemic,” as George Bernard Shaw so coarsely quipped. True, the allure of couture may be but a cursory current, consonant solely with what fashionistas say reigns salient, but also holds the honor of paving the way for en-masse movements, in design and even otherwise.
‘Twas the crunchy granola set -- happily heeled in Birks ‘n’ socks, yes -- that blazed the yet-untraversed road to reverence for our rotund home, but ‘tis the lovely likes of Linda Loudermilk who have seen to it that sustainability spring forward in design, revolutionizing haute couture forever.
Eco-fashion is exploding onto the style scene with a veritable verve, but this is a movement that will serve in a daringly different capacity than all of its preceding progressions: Trenches in tweed may be hot, but eco-fashion is also en route to uber-chic, with absolute necessity trumping aesthetic appeal. Yes, Mamas, we must hasten our habits eco-wise now, now, now.
This Earth Day, tuck your tots into bed with Deborah Frasier’s awe-inspiring words of wisdom a la On the Day You Were Born. Meanwhile, let us make a most vital vow to Earth’s heirs and heiresses -- that the silent mystery by which a forest of tall trees makes oxygen for us all to breathe will be their miracle to behold, as well.
Happy Birthday, Precious Planet.
