Birthday Bash-ing
‘Tis the season for birthday parties. All those spring babies we welcomed into the world over the past few years are growing up and gearing up for their annual celebrations... or rather, their parents are.
Ben and I had two big b-day events last weekend -- one for Emma, a lovely little girl in his preschool class; the other for Jackson, the son of a college pal. Both kids were turning 3; both parties took place at their parents’ homes.
Emma’s affair was a grander gala than most weddings. There were pony rides, bouncy castles, Disney princesses wandering about, a life-size cake in Emma’s image, and an entire petting zoo put forth for the pleasure of 50-plus pampered preschool partygoers and their parents, most of whom spent the afternoon pretending not to be awestruck. Ben had a blast, and I must say I’ve never seen anything quite like it... and I’ve seen plenty.
The next day, we celebrated Jackson’s fete -- another beautiful backyard blowout. We enjoyed burgers and hot dogs, streamers and cupcakes, a clown and some games. No posh ponies there, but lots of pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey and a splendid SpongeBob piñata.
Ben barely noticed the difference. He had just as much fun feeding the llamas at Emma’s as he did coloring the giant refrigerator box Jackson’s mom had saved and dragged outside for the occasion. The point? Three-year olds are a rather easy lot to impress, so consider saving the fireworks for their Sweet Sixteens!
