Viva La Vacation!
Allie talks travel
Cold and flu season had me plurally paranoid. Never germ-phobic before the arrival of my twins, newborns’ inherent susceptibility to illness squelched the wanderlust in this normally mobile Mama. As a result, we traveled minimally in our twosome’s first months. (In my defense, Mai and Ringo’s pediatrician validated my anxiety as “womanly wisdom.” Daddy acquiesced.)
Now, with onesie-wearing weather upon us, we’re seeking scenery to not only stimulate our pumpkins, but to cure our parental cabin fever.
The pressure is on. Not just one, but two baby books will document our twins’ first foray away from home. We’re planning to make it memorable.
Selecting a locale suitable for the family’s unique dynamic is essential. At this stage of our little ones’ development, there’s no need to rush into character-driven theme parks. From our duo’s perspective, chewing on the parking passes could prove just as enjoyable. Sure the neon lights of Las Vegas might kindle visual excitement, but overall, it’s not the ideal environment for two infants.
After much deliberation, we’ve made reservations at a seeming paradise – rich in photo ops, delectable dining, sitter support (for a romantic evening or two) and rental resources for double the bulky baby supplies we prefer not to pack (e.g., cribs, bouncy seats, Pack ’n Plays).
Preliminary plans made, before embarking on any journey, I always have a sit-down with my go-to-travel-gal, Syd. Her advice? Whether your eyes are on the islands or honed in on hiking, make sure your home base is hospitable for your tiniest travel mate(s). Relaxation requires rest, and we all know friends who’ve returned from their “vacation” more exhausted than before they left. If your family sleep routine at home is facilitated by a book-music-nightlight ritual, pack ‘em. A small sacrifice of suitcase space can ensure refreshed and energized morning wake-ups perfect for memory-making.
Memories…time for us to make a few.
