For the Love of Fido

Long before Shiloh, Suri and Shaya made their most-marveled ingress into this illustrious infant-infatuated world, another species reigned supreme. Paris' tiny Tinkerbell, Jessica's Maltipoo, and most certainly Mrs. Helmsley's Maltese have all been bestowed the benefit of the good life as the quadrupedal confidantes of the eminent and humane.

While the ways of celebrities with an affinity for animals may have set the pamper-precedent for posh pets everywhere, the fame factor is certainly not what dictates the extent to which an animal is adored and ergo, adorned. Rather, the desire to fawn upon our fauna friends is consonant with a quality paramount to our innermost inherent nature. Quite simply, we love to love, and be loved.

It matters not whether the precious object of your affection, adoration and accessorization is of the human or four-legged variety, it's the very process by which we go about professing our love and pining for the same in kind that makes us human.

The unbridled love we feel for our precious pets is certainly not unlike the maternal manifestation of absolute affection. The way we choose to love our babies -- and "babies" -- is but a reflection of our own aspirations for affection. As Elbert Hubbard once waxed with philosophic fabulousity, the love we give away is the only love we keep.

Sure, it may sporadically seem that we dote de trop on our little loved ones, leaving paths of prodigious purchase wherever we may go, but this thing called love, unconditionally …'tis a funny little feeling, no?

Some may stumble upon this emotion of extraordinary proportions by way of soulmate, but still others find the spirit within to extend their hearts and embrace those much less capable of professing endearment. No, my altruistic adorers of domesticated creatures … from your canine, feline and equine friends, you can only hope for a cold, wet nuzzle from a muzzle in return for your enduring devotion, and emphatically expect nothing more.

Good thing that’s enough!
