What’s Your Bag, Ladies?

Some matches are made in heaven: peanut butter and chocolate, gin and tonic, me and my hubby. When I was pregnant with Ben, I was overjoyed to stumble upon yet another magical union when two of my favorite things in the world collided: babies and purses. Yes, a diaper bag is quite possibly the most pleasurable purchase a pregnant woman will make.

Sure, shopping for that babe in your belly is a blast overall, but let’s be honest here: The diaper bag is for you, an accessory like any other, a way to flaunt your sense of fun and fashion. From Petunia Pickle Bottom to Kate Spade, Diaper Dude to Fleurville, there’s bound to be at least one beauty out there to make every parent’s heart go pitter-patter.

On the other hand, diaper bags can also go terribly wrong.

There’s not much I despise more than diaper bags that look like, well, diaper bags. A mere decade or so ago, style-savvy mamas were forced to frequent their local big-box baby superstore in search of something suitable. Confronted with an endless sea of odious, oversized sacks made of quilted navy-blue chintz and covered with smarmy little teddy bears and duckies, many moms simply elected to use a big handbag instead, though the lack of pockets and ill-suited fabrics were presumably problematic.

Now, stylish satchels with fun add-ins like matching wipes cases, waterproof change-pads and all the other clever bells and whistles make the quest for the perfect portable tote for your tot a pleasure to be savored -- one store, one site, one shoulder at a time...
