When you give birth you deliver more than a child; you create grandparents.

If we're to trust their word (and they've never given us reason not to), nothing compares to the satisfaction and fulfillment of becoming a grandparent. Your parents' pride in your children is likely matched only by the thrill of seeing their children serve in a role they've filled since your birth.

Who better than Grandma to reveal that baby girl's squinchy-faced grin resembles her daddy's when he was her age? (She may even unearth a photo to prove it.) When your toddler boy's habit of excessive finger-wiggling has you panicked, the pediatrician can try, but no one can reassure like Grandpa - who confirms you did the very same thing. (Then thoughtfully, he'll remember a few other "oddities" from your childhood to share.) You'll want a night out with your spouse after baby's birth. Is there anyone on earth to whom you'd rather entrust your newborn? (Chances are your "sitter" will be so enamored with their little charge, they'll encourage you to go out for your anniversary, for Valentine's Day, for Arbor Day...)

Whether the fruit of your labor is the first or fifteenth grandbaby, the life-changing, generation-adding occasion merits holiday commemoration.

In the timeline of origin, first came Mother's Day. Then Father's Day. Belatedly, Grandparent's Day became an official observation less than 30 years ago.
