For my sibs, summer's bittersweet end was ever punctuated by their emphatic procurement of pencils, paper and other academic accoutrement. And while I also anticipated the annual school supply spin with equal elation, it was our perennial peregrination for back-to-school fashion when you would espy a slighter Syd, pre-strapped in an already-started station wagon.

Books? Supply lists? Glamours and Vogues spanning years of seasons and fashion.

I sought not what most of my classroom compeers merely conceded to wearing on day one -- I was an unfurling fashionista, and my mission to hit that hallowed hallway in September like it was Fall Fashion Week in Milan was one I upheld with the utmost of duty-driven verve.

I endeavored to don impeccable, miniature versions of fashions flaunted with supremely statuesque finesse by the likes of Linda, Naomi and Elle.

Quintessential quality over quantity. No transient trends, but rather, timelessly transformative pieces. Nay to knee-length plaids and poly, but yay for A-lines and pencils!

Lucky for my like-minded little one, some of the fashion world's most revered designers have recently rushed to include perfectly Lilliputian lines for little ones. Par exemplar? Phillip Lim's latest prêt-a-porter en petit: Magnifique!

While a twee-worthy trousseau perhaps has its place on picture day, kid-picked style should reign supreme for fostering a sense of empowered independence. Indeed, it was only thanks to a certain -- and unequivocally stylish -- someone's willingness to allow my own freedom in spirit and style that pushed me to pursue some of life's more creative offerings in both profession and passion. (Mille grazie, Mama!)

Lesson learned: What's hot is feeling beautiful and wearing what makes you rock down whatever hallway, runway or breezeway like the star that you are, whether on the first day of school or every day.

Now, go forth and let your school-bound little ones revel in the priceless opportunity to burst onto that fabulous, locker-flanked fashion scene with a style that's all their own.
