The Giving of the Green

Everyday the mailbox is full of requests for financial support. Everyday I deliberate thoughtfully over which organizations might best use funds given to maximum benefit. In addition -- much to Mai and Ringo's grandmother's chagrin -- I always pass a little green to every soul who extends their hand my way. If my mother has said it once, she's said it innumerable times, "Give a person a fish, he/she eats for a day. Teach a person to fish..." -- well, you know the rest. In her well-meaning way, she always follows up with "You know what they will use it for, Allie." To which I can never keep my mouth shut and always reply, "What they use it for is their responsibility, to help them is mine." You can imagine how the discussion disintegrates from there...and sadly, on what is actually an issue upon which we agree, the imperative of caring for those who share our planet.

At last, I think I've found some common ground -- enter Kiva! Entrepreneurs from the developing world who are seeking loans to support their community and family ventures have voiced their need; and Kiva, an organization committed to facilitating "loans that change lives," makes the matches. From funds for fish farming to second-hand clothing sales, enabling the purchase of barber shop storefront to taxi upkeep, relatively small amounts of money can make a life-altering difference.

Give, and give generously!
