  • The Greatest Green Baby Gift Ever?

Allie, I wish I’d known about this one when Mai and Ringo were born.... The Green Perspective – online purveyors of earth-friendly gift baskets of all kinds – has just added another amazing item to its inventory of offerings:

The "Eco Mom + Green Baby" gift bag includes such goodies as glass bottles; the brilliant New Native Baby Carrier; a plush toy made out of recycled sweaters from Pear Tree Studio; and Raising Baby Green by Dr. Alan Greene, a primer on raising an eco-conscious kid; as well as several other organically oriented goodies.

It’s all great stuff, sure to give new moms something to use... and something to think about.

  • Handbagger Helper

As an unrepentant bag-lady, I admit that I have more purses than I know what to do with. And, over the course of any given day, though my wardrobe may stay the same, I often go through three or four bag changes at least. (Call it a whim or call it indecision, but switching satchels and shoes just makes sense when I don’t have the time for a full-on outfit refit.)

Such a miraculous feat is possible through the grace of one simple gadget – the Purseket, a.k.a. "The Perfect Purse Organizer." And indeed it is. With its multiple pockets and structured shape, I can easily pack it with all my daily essentials and then just toss it from bag to bag as I go.

Choose your own fabric and choose your own size, but whatever you do, choose to use it and you’ll see at least some of your clutter chaos banished forever. Ah... if only the rest of my life were this easily organized!

P.S. Isabelle’s stroller ode to Miami Vice has me dreaming of Crockett and Tubbs for my tot in Technicolor!

  • Lunch Time Terror

My culinary skills being what they are, packing a lovely lunch for Ben to tote off to pre-school presents something of a problem for me.

I guess I can go with the usual – grilled cheese, raisins and a couple of chocolate chip cookies, but I fear he’ll be the only kid whose mom still packs it old-school. Hopefully by the time he starts "classes" next week, I’ll have found some sort of prepackaged gourmet perfection that can be delivered to my doorstep fresh and fantastic on a weekdaily basis.

Failing that, maybe I’ll sneak Tricia Chin’s exceedingly adorable take on things into the Superman lunchbox Ben’s been toting around empty and eagerly these past few weeks. Her friendly faced trio is sure to be a hit with busy moms everywhere -- their shelf life is indefinite, they're high in fibre and you'll never have to worry about those nasty juice-box stains!

P.S. Any simple and healthy and portable kid-friendly meal ideas would be much appreciated, Posh Mamas. (Allie, you gourmet goddess, I’m looking at you...)

  • One Cute Cup of Joe

Now that I’m past the first trimester, my doctor said it would be okay for me to indulge in the occasional cup of coffee. Real coffee. (For me, decaf is tantamount to deserting the faith!)

I don’t partake every day... just those vexing morns when a little java jolt is especially called for. It’s not just the coffee I crave, it’s the ritual, the relaxation, the reflection. So when I see a cute mug like this, I often can’t resist...

This tongue-in-cheek tasse from The MoMA Store – one of my all-time favorite shopping spots, both online and in person – brings me back to the long days and late nights of my editorial internship in New York City. Even if my taste has evolved from the muddy, bitter brew which I braved long before those sugar-free-vanilla-non-fat-lattes-with-an-extra-shot spoiled my palate, the ceramic version of the classic crappy NYC coffee cup is still something to love and cherish.

  • My Posh Craving: Key Lime Pie

Miami is marvelous, no doubt about it.

Lately, though, it’s not the nightlife or the shopping or the music or even the mesmerizing moonlight that has me missing the Magic City.

It’s the pie. Specifically, the Key lime pie.

Though it may not be PC to admit this, my favorite slice of this heavenly treat isn’t found at any of the dozen or so restaurants and hotels claiming to have invented the confection, or even in the Florida Keys themselves, but rather at Joe’s Stone Crab in the heart of South Beach.

Mercifully for me and my burgeoning bump, the legendary seaside seafood outpost actually ships its signature dessert overnight right to your front door. Pregnant pals will be delighted to learn that operators are standing by, 24 hours a day.

Or, for those of you so inclined, the resto now altruistically includes the recipe for its famous Key Lime Pie on its website. Personally, I wouldn’t risk it – in this case, the price of perfection is one I’m more than willing to pay.

  • Christian Siriano for Moody Mamas

Hot hot hot off the presses!

Oh-so-sassy Christian Siriano of Project-Runway renown has announced he will be launching his own line of mat wear this spring:

He plans to call the line Fierce (which makes me love it already), and he’ll be creating it for the already-fantastic bumpwear designers delightfully known as Moody Mamas. Judging by the preliminary sketches, the frock-heavy collection appears to be flowy, fun and – like everything else we’ve come to expect from reality TV’s fashion boy wonder – a little bit off-the-wall. Only problem is, I don’t know if I can wait till next spring!

Yup, I think I may just be planning Baby # 3...

  • Modern Mobile Madness

The joy of decorating Baby’s room is one of the greatest gifts a pregnant Posh Mama receives from her little blessing. I’ve spent many pensive hours daydreaming about the nursery – the perfect form of procrastination if ever there was one – lost in my own thoughts and surfing the web for ever-more-marvelous finds, many of which I’ve shared here with you.

In so doing, I’ve made no secret of my aversion to many of the boring baby products out there, from silly juvenile prints on diaper bags to tired room themes and crib bedding. When there’s so much beauty and style available, I say why limit yourself to the same old stuff everyone else chooses?

I recently came across these retro-modern mobiles from Julie Frith and knew I had to share:

Her incredibly restrained yet elegant redesign of an old standard offers a fresh and funny take on the traditional, and I especially love that you can customize the colors of the model you choose to match with your own decor. Some of these mobiles are a little bit buggy, others are simply beautiful, but all of them are incredibly unique... just like you and the babe in your arms.

P.S. Allie gets my vote for top pick of the year with the perfectly posh Heelarious High Heels she found!

  • The Perfect Plastic Purse!

When it comes to handbags, I’m not normally much of a logo girl – I’ll take Prada over Louis Vuitton and Pucci over Gucci any day. But I’ve recently come around to one very cool concept: plasticized canvas.

Since I’ve been a little impatient lately, waiting on this big ole’ bump of mine to be born, I decided to get me a new baby in the meantime:

The Gucci Joy Medium Tote – with gorgeous gunmetal leather trim – offers the best of both worlds: The quality and cache we love about high-end Italian luxury goods, as well as the durability of plastic thanks to its subtle vinyl-coated classic GG logo canvas.

I think there may be another name for a beautiful bag that can’t be scuffed, scarred or stickied up by little hands or visits to the park: priceless.

    XOXO

P.S. Have you seen Isabelle’s tiny cotton-and-cashmere sets for newborns? Too cute!

  • Sexy Symbols

Somehow, this tricked-out maternity T-shirt from Uber Goober Designs really does it for me:

The idea of that sexy – and oh-so-sexist – mudflap girl with a big ol’ baby belly just makes me laugh! What’s next? Baby showers at the Playboy Mansion? Nursing bras with tassels? Biker babes with baby bumps?

    XOXO

  • Cool Supplies

With all the great kids’ clothes my gal pals have been showcasing around here lately, we surely have no shortage of chic shirttails and puppy-dog tails. But isn’t the huge September shopping surge lurking around the corner about more than just sweet togs for our tots? Personally, I find the annual procurement of paper products equally thrilling... even though Ben is just barely able to hold a pen properly!

So here’s some fun stuff for him: An adorable lunch box and a set of MUJI "no brand" colored pencils...

But just because I’ve been out of school for more years than I care to remember – or reveal! – doesn’t mean I can’t get on board with all the fun, right? So here’s one for me, too: The Cherry Blossom Journal from the slightly-too-aptly-named Old School Stationers. This incredible Oregon-based outift offers a stunning selection of cards and paper goods printed on an old 1917 letterpress.

This year, I think we’ll both be too cool for school!

  • Make Your Own Monster?

Considering all the retail attention I’ve been paying to myself lately – especially with all that diaper-bag drooling going on around here last week – I decided it was high time I found something fun for Ben to get on board with.

A Mama friend of mine recently pointed me in the direction of one of the coolest kids’ services I’ve seen in a long time: Make My Own Monster, a welcome departure from those ubiquitous teddy-bear factories in every mall across the country.

Even little ones worried about what might be lurking beneath their beds at night will love the idea of this "Custom Monster Program": Junior receives the Make-Your-Own-Monster Design Kit by mail, puts a face on his deepest fears with the pencils and paper provided, sends it back, and then presto – a totally unique and faithfully reproduced version of his creature creation arrives at the front door a few weeks later.

M.M.O.M kicks butt as a b-day gift, but even better? I can’t think of a more marvelous way to get trepidatious toddlers or overly concerned kindergartners to stop fretting and start loving those things that go bump in the night...

    XOXO

P.S. Once you receive your kid’s cute critter, make sure you give it a good home! Check out Syd’s selection of sweet-dream beds right here.

  • Thank You for Being a Friend, Sophia

Sadly, we lost a golden gal pal this week – Estelle Getty, who played the sassy and Sicilian Sophia Petrillo on The Golden Girls for seven superb seasons. The octogenarian queen of mean’s character was fondly known for constantly clutching her bag close... and so I would like to honor her here today with this – The lovely leather "Sophia" bag from Alexandra Bee:

Thanks to some really great finds from Allie and Syd, I dare say we already have an embarrassment of riches to choose from. Still, I couldn’t resist adding this magical carry-all to the mix.

It’s a sensational satchel all around, not only because it satisfies my main requirement in a diaper bag – that it look nothing like one – but also because it comes in sizes small and large, inspiring sighs of delight in both space-craving and space-saving sorts alike.

Life is short, and babyhood even shorter. While a mere year or two may not be long enough for a new Mama to try out all the truly terrific totes scattered across the retail universe, she certainly can try.

  • Let's Not Go To The Movies...

Is it just me or do your pre-schoolers freak out at the movies?

We actually had to walk out of the last movie we tried to see after about 20 minutes because Ben’s fear-factor went through the theater roof. (Which reminds me... does anybody know what happened once Horton Heard the Who?)

But Ben’s been talking about Wall-E for weeks – how he even knew about it is beyond me – so this weekend, we decided to take him to see it. Mamas, I should have known better.

At least we managed to make it through the whole film, but Ben sat frozen like a deer in headlights the entire time. Didn’t make a peep, didn’t touch his popcorn (though I sure did!), didn’t even blink. He was pretty much stunned for the rest of the day afterwards, now that I think about it, and last night he woke up with bad dreams. Poor little guy. I think he was trying to be tough and brave.

All this to say that I think we’re going to stick to the small screen at home, lights on, for the next little while. And forget about all that computer-animated, fantasy-filled, surround-sound scariness – there are plenty of cool, villain-free classics that’ll keep him entertained on rainy afternoons without terrifying him...

And if he thinks we’re going to see Space Chimps, he can forget it!

    XOXO

  • Smashing Smocks

While you’re cooking up a storm in the kitchen this week, wearing the adorable Jessie Steele apron I found to keep you at your culinary best, why not bring the kids into the cake mix?

These super-fun personalized smocks from Polkadot Patch are a great way to keep your little helpers busy by being just like mom... and almost as cute!

Don't despair if your kid (like mine) prefers the fine arts to the culinary arts... the company’s ingenious crayon-carriers may be a better fit!

  • In the Doghouse!

With all of the wild and wonderful finds for our Posh pets last week, I fear I forgot to mention one of my faves: Dog House Wines.

I know, I know – this Mama’s teetotally off the sauce until her unborn babe’s safe and sound in her arms... but I couldn’t resist the chance to share the offerings of a fantastic winery and the great cause it supports, one beautiful bottle at a time.

From Checkers’ Cabernet to Zeke’s Zinfandel – yes, even the names are canine-inspired! – a portion of the profits for every bottle sold also goes to Guide Dogs for The Blind, the nonprofit association dedicated to high-fidelity fido bonding for the visually impaired. And in case you’re wondering, Dog House Wines are as bold as they are big-hearted: they’ve won almost 50 medals in just three years and have been featured favorably in mags like Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast.

As we here at Posh celebrate the culinary arts this week, one of these wines is sure to make the perfect pairing with whatever you happen to be cooking up in the kitchen...

    XOXO
