    Baby Bottles

While reading the latest edition of People Magazine and more specifically the interview with Nicole Richie about her adorable baby, Harlow, I learned about the plastic "Born Free" baby bottles, made without the chemical Bisphenol-A.  I know that recent news has reported that we should be wary of warming plastic containers, which contain Bisphenol-A and other chemicals that are used in plastic products, as they may contaminate the food/beverages in them.  Being that this is my first pregnancy, I'm not really too bottle savvy, but I am concerned about buying plastic baby bottles that, when warmed, maybe contaminate the milk or formula in them.  I really don't want to use glass bottles, as I'm sure the bottles might be heavy to carry or shatter when dropped.

Does anyone have any experience with the Born Free baby bottles?

    Re: Baby Bottles

I recently had my daughter, Marcella and had the same concerns about plastic.  I found te Born Free brand and so far she does not like the very large nipple that it comes with.  I use the bottles right now to store the premade formula that I use throught the day and evening.  I also use the bottles to heat her formla which i do in a cup of hot water.  My daughter was in the NICU for almost 3 months and her nurses there taught me to do this.  About 15 mins before I feed her I warm the formula in a cup of very hot tap water.  It brings the formula to a great temp every time and is simple.  I just change her diaper and am ready to go.... Sorry I got off track.  Like I said...The born free is a great investment if your baby likes the nipples it comes with.  If not use it for formula storage until she likes the nipples...I have purchased the glass bottle for formula storage as well and it is very sturdy and would feel confident carrying it in my diaper bag.  I hope this helps!

    Re: Baby Bottles

I do not have information on the bottles--plastic or glass.  However, I nursed my little girl for 13 months, and my lactation coach encouraged me to never heat milk/formula in the microwave either way.

I pumped quite a bit b/c I had a lot of milk, and after freezing the bags, when I was ready to use them, I would place them in a cup of hot water, and let it naturally thaw and warm.  She said that milk does not necessarily need to be very warm for your baby to enjoy it, and that heating in the microwave takes out the natural components as it heats.  When nursing, she said the milk is just barely luke warm, so when not nursing, it should be the same.

When I stopped nursing her, I finished using the pumped milk I had, and by the time she was 16 or so months old, I warmed regular milk in a glass of hot water too, as directed.

I hope this helps, as everyone is different.  The point my lactation coach made was to do the same with the milk whether nursing or not.  And my daughter never had any difficulty with the transition, partly b/c the temp was always the same!

     Good Luck!

    Re: Baby Bottles

We have a great video from the folks at Born Free over on BabyTV.com right now -- click here to see it!

Also, there are lots of options if you want to go BPA-free, but don't like the Born Free bottles. Adiri's natural nurser is a really popular bottle right now and I think Dr. Brown's is now also manufacturing BPA-free bottles.

     Dear Megan,

Thank you so much for the information.  This being my first pregnancy, I had not heard about the Adiri Natural Nurser bottles, and they seem to be a great option to consider.  Thank you again for the advice.

    Re: Baby Bottles

     Dear Tamara,

Thank you for the information.  I had never thought about the temperature of the milk when you nurse -- there's just so much to learn!  I appreciate the information, and it gives me something else to think about.  My sister-in-law had her daughter three-years ago, and also worked with a lactation coach, but the baby just won't take to the nursing.  I'm hoping I don't have the same problem.  I'll definitely keep in mind the temperature of the milk/formula, and the safe methods of warming the milk.

Thank you again for the information.

    Re: Baby Bottles

     Dear Yolanda,

Thank you for the advice, and for the warming tip.  I've heard from a few people who seemed to have the same issue you encountered with your daughter, in terms of the Born Free bottles.  Someone had recommended another type of bottle, the Adiri Natural Nurser, that are also BPA-free.  I guess once my little one arrives, we'll see what they have to say about this issue!

Thank you for the informaiton, it's much appreciated.
